Funding Sources for AT Presentation

Assistive technology devices are essential for individuals with disabilities to lead an independent life. However, these devices can be costly, and acquiring them can be a challenge. In this presentation by the University of Wyoming, Terry Wofford discusses assistive technology funding.

Various topics are covered related to funding assistive technology devices, including defining durable medical equipment (DME), identifying funding sources for assistive technology, including speech generating devices, and understanding Medicaid codes and vendors for DME. One of key takeaways from the video is that medical necessity for durable medical equipment is the key factor in funding decisions, and assistive technology that does not meet the definition of durable medical equipment may not be covered by insurance or Medicaid.

The video highlights four key questions to determine funding eligibility for durable medical equipment, including checking the person's insurance eligibility and coverage, determining if the item or service is medically necessary, verifying if the item will be covered by insurance, and checking for any specific eligibility or coverage rules that may apply.

If insurance will not cover a piece of assistive technology, other options may need to be explored.  Assistive technology devices can be borrowed from educational systems or from various other community sources which are listed in the presentation. Some of those sources include Home and Community-Based Services program, Technology Access Program, ABLE accounts, civic organizations, national organizations, and high school clubs which may aid with communication or hearing items.

In conclusion, the presentation provides valuable insights for individuals with disabilities and their teams on how to fund assistive technology devices. It is essential to understand the various funding sources and eligibility criteria for durable medical equipment, as well as the availability of assistive technology devices and materials.
