If you’re looking for AAC training opportunities
I miss going to conferences. There’s something so invigorating about getting away from work for a few days, visiting with my colleagues and professionals from the field, putting my hands on technologies, and learning about all that’s new. But, since COVID has put a damper on in-person events, I’ve come to realize just how awesome virtual instruction can be (saving our time, money, and health), by allowing us to learn from home. We want to share information with you about TWO great conferences coming up that will provide amazing instruction on ‘all things AAC’.
What a Shame…..
This article was anonymously submitted for publication by a practicing SLP who feels very strongly that we should educate ourselves about recognizing and using the power of AAC for all who can benefit. For those without sufficient verbal abilities, AAC provides a means of communicating information, thoughts, ideas, opinions, and emotions like the rest of us. To deny this right (or devalue it) is the real shame here…
Core Vocabulary: where do we start?
Not sure where to start when trying to address the AAC needs of very young students or those with complex communication needs? Look at the CORE! Core vocabulary is made of about 300 words, but makes up 80% or more of our communications. Identifying a student’s recognition of basic core words..and deciding where to start if there are none…is key to introducing picture-supported AAC.
AAC Webinar Series - the Virtual Institute
The Tennessee Talks project is excited to announce our new series of virtual educational sessions addressing ‘all things AAC’. All activities are FREE and designed to support speech therapy staff, AT Specialists, special education teams, and families of children who use AAC.
Choosing the Right AAC App

Symbol Sets, Devices, and Software: an Overview of AAC Lingo
Confused by the alphabet soup of AAC lingo? This guided tour will help you get started!

Assessment of Learning Process for AAC
The Assessment of Learning Profile (ALP) is an invaluable tool when attempting to identify alternative means of access for AAC use
Supporting AAC use Through Telepractice…
While we are all staying safe at home, Tennessee Talks is working to figure out new, innovative ways to provide ongoing services to students, their families, and speech therapists through virtual outreach. And, even more importantly, we are trying to help YOU serve the AAC needs of your students while at home.
Autism and AAC
Information and resources shared at the East Tennessee Autism Society Conference, April 27, 2019. Resources are intended to support families and educational teams working with students with Autism who may need augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
