AAC Interest Inventory Checklist

If you’re looking for AAC training opportunities
I miss going to conferences. There’s something so invigorating about getting away from work for a few days, visiting with my colleagues and professionals from the field, putting my hands on technologies, and learning about all that’s new. But, since COVID has put a damper on in-person events, I’ve come to realize just how awesome virtual instruction can be (saving our time, money, and health), by allowing us to learn from home. We want to share information with you about TWO great conferences coming up that will provide amazing instruction on ‘all things AAC’.
Hit the Pause Button on AAC
Just as we need a BREAK or PAUSE from the hectic schedule to give us time to regain our momentum, our AAC users also need PAUSES. For our students using some form of AAC, these PAUSES do not last a week but just a few minutes. Many of our students with speech and language challenges struggle with processing information quickly.
AAC Friendly Classroom
An equitable classroom is one that is accessible to all students who occupy it. Here are some strategies to create a supportive learning environment for students with complex communication needs.
Targeting AAC and Natural Speech in a Therapy Session
One of the most common questions that we get from therapists is, “Should I target AAC and natural speech within the same session? And if so, how?” The answer is an emphatic “yes!” and you can do this in a couple of different ways.
Growing AAC Professionals: Resources on PrAACtical AAC
Vicki Haddix’s SLP graduate students at the University of Memphis created some great final projects for their AAC course. See the full post about the final projects on PrAACtical AAC!
Teaching Core Words
AAC can feel overwhelming and sometimes it is hard to know where to start teaching since there is this new piece of technology to consider! Providing Aided Language Input (ALI) is one thing, but how does one go about targeted TEACHING of specific words?
AAC… How to do it in this crazy school world we are living in
Angela Shofner provided a presentation entitled AAC… How to do it in this crazy school world we are living in, offering many suggestions on how her staff is implementing AAC using a core vocabulary approach throughout the Rutherford County School District. The presentation’s emphasis was how they developed and implemented a plan to ensure goals are being addressed consistently in both the school and therapy settings. The basis of the plan was to provide frequent modeling with AAC devices and core boards to increase the students' learning and language integration.
