IDEAS FOR INTRODUCING AAC - Session content from AAC in The Cloud Conference 2022
Our Tennessee Talks team presented an outstanding educational session at the AAC in The Cloud Conference 2022, offering ideas for introducing and supporting AAC use with children.
If you’re looking for AAC training opportunities
I miss going to conferences. There’s something so invigorating about getting away from work for a few days, visiting with my colleagues and professionals from the field, putting my hands on technologies, and learning about all that’s new. But, since COVID has put a damper on in-person events, I’ve come to realize just how awesome virtual instruction can be (saving our time, money, and health), by allowing us to learn from home. We want to share information with you about TWO great conferences coming up that will provide amazing instruction on ‘all things AAC’.
Editing and Implementing Proloquo2Go
Rebecca Hofman from AT4Kids has recorded a great interactive training video on how to edit and customize Proloquo2Go. For anyone starting out using this app it will show you how to edit buttons, folders, and other important customizations you will need to set up the communication app for your students.
Teaching Core Words
AAC can feel overwhelming and sometimes it is hard to know where to start teaching since there is this new piece of technology to consider! Providing Aided Language Input (ALI) is one thing, but how does one go about targeted TEACHING of specific words?
What a Shame…..
This article was anonymously submitted for publication by a practicing SLP who feels very strongly that we should educate ourselves about recognizing and using the power of AAC for all who can benefit. For those without sufficient verbal abilities, AAC provides a means of communicating information, thoughts, ideas, opinions, and emotions like the rest of us. To deny this right (or devalue it) is the real shame here…
More about Core….
Not so sure about core words? Today we share an article written in 2017 by Carole Zangari that will help dispel any misconceptions you might have about their value!
Core Vocabulary: where do we start?
Not sure where to start when trying to address the AAC needs of very young students or those with complex communication needs? Look at the CORE! Core vocabulary is made of about 300 words, but makes up 80% or more of our communications. Identifying a student’s recognition of basic core words..and deciding where to start if there are none…is key to introducing picture-supported AAC.
I teach kids to talk back
Guest author Claire Campbell, CCC-SLP, ATP, makes a great point here when she reminds us that kids using AAC to communicate DO need to be able to show a little ‘sass’ and talk back to us in age-appropriate ways!
AAC Webinar Series - the Virtual Institute
The Tennessee Talks project is excited to announce our new series of virtual educational sessions addressing ‘all things AAC’. All activities are FREE and designed to support speech therapy staff, AT Specialists, special education teams, and families of children who use AAC.
Families Needed for Vanderbilt University AAC Research Project
The COVID-19 pandemic has obviously brought so many challenges for families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Researchers at Vanderbilt University have received a small grant from the Spencer Foundation to try to address some of these challenges by learning more about the ways that families are involved in language and literacy learning for children with disabilities who have limited verbal speech, and how to support strong outcomes for children in their families.
