AAC and Smart Home Devices
Smart home devices and AAC devices can be used together in the classroom setting to help students with communication disabilities better participate in classroom activities and improve their educational experience.
AAC Awareness Month: Tip 1
In honor of AAC Awareness month, we will be posting a quick AAC tip each week.
Our FIRST TIP… it’s Sale Time for AAC apps!
Who doesn’t love a good sale? A reminder to all that, in honor of International AAC Awareness Month, many of the vendors will be placing their AAC apps on sale. Check out this posting by Lauren Enders, SLP. Lauren has once again done a great job of tracking the sales for the different AAC apps and listing the dates of their sales.
Total Communication in the Classroom
What does total communication in the classroom actually look like? It can seem daunting! How do you take a hodgepodge of visuals, low-tech talkers, and high-tech AAC devices and turn them into a functional means of communication for all of your students?
“I Use My Device to Talk!” AAC Social Story
"I Use My Device to Talk!" is an interactive social story to help students learn that their AAC device is for talking, not for throwing. The story focuses on using the AAC device for functional communication in order to decrease problem behavior and increase engagement. Also, the built-in communication board can be used for the teacher or parent to practice their AAC modeling skills.
AAC Goal Writing and Data Collection
Goal writing is something that takes continuous practice and tweaking. Sure, you might have found some great goal banks for speech, language, and fluency. But if you don’t have many AAC users on your caseload, you may struggle with coming up with quality goals for those kids! Goal writing can be extra hard for areas you don’t support often!
S’MoRRES and SIMPLE AAC
How do we start assisting our students to use their AAC devices? It is difficult to know all of the steps for implementing AAC. However, don’t get lost in the details, remember that as an SLP or teacher you already have many of the skills you need to get started. Two mnemonics to help you recall the steps are S’MoRRES and SIMPLE AAC.
AT and ACC in the IEP: A Guide for School Teams
We are often asked ‘where’ and ‘how’ to write AAC into the IEP document, so we decided to research the state and federal regulations to find answers and offer a helpful guide for this process.
2021 East Tennessee Autism Conference Sessions
AT4Kids’ Tennessee Talks team presented four sessions at the 2021 East Tennessee Autism Conference: Find session information, slides, flyers about language development, modeling and implementing AAC, choosing between an iPad and an SGD, and get an introduction to AAC.
