More about Core….
Not so sure about core words? Today we share an article written in 2017 by Carole Zangari that will help dispel any misconceptions you might have about their value!
Core Vocabulary: where do we start?
Not sure where to start when trying to address the AAC needs of very young students or those with complex communication needs? Look at the CORE! Core vocabulary is made of about 300 words, but makes up 80% or more of our communications. Identifying a student’s recognition of basic core words..and deciding where to start if there are none…is key to introducing picture-supported AAC.
Project Core Planning and Reflection Forms
Project Core provides forms to guide teachers in the universal implementation of core in the classroom.
Core Words Skills Checklist
Which are the best core words to start implementing with your student first?
There’s no one right answer to this question because it depends on the student. The first step is to determine where your student is right now—what they understand and what they can express.
Tangible Object Communication Activities
When initiating communication activities for any child with significant disabilities, we must first look at their receptive skills to see what is understood with regards to people, places, objects and specific core vocabulary words. Using activities that incorporate words that are familiar to the student helps reinforce attention and engagement. Core vocabulary are the 250+ words that form the basis of about 80% of everything we say, allowing us to engage within multiple contexts about an infinite number of topics.
